Second wall insulation grant

A home that had a wall insulation grant can apply for a second wall measure. Which one depends on what it had first.

Figures checked against seai.ie on 28 October 2026. How we check

SEAI says: "If your home has previously received a grant for wall insulation, you may now apply for a second wall insulation measure."

Had a cavity wall grant: apply for internal or external wall insulation. Had internal insulation: external only. Had external insulation: no second measure. A second cavity grant is not available (seai.ie, checked 28 October 2026).

No second cavity grant

If your cavity was filled with an SEAI grant before, you can't get a second grant to fill or top up the cavity. The second measure is internal or external insulation. If the old cavity fill isn't doing its job, those are the grant-aided options.

Why SEAI added it

The second measure lets homes insulated with cavity fill or dry lining upgrade further, to make the home heat pump ready. A heat pump suits a home that holds its heat well, and external or internal insulation goes further than a cavity fill alone.

How to apply

Through SEAI's standard application process, the same as a first wall grant. The usual rules apply: the home built and occupied before 31 December 2010, an MPRN, an SEAI-registered contractor, and all external walls fully insulated. Partial insulation isn't eligible.

  1. Find a registered contractor and get quotes.Use a contractor on SEAI's register. Get a written price with VAT.
  2. Apply to SEAI for a grant offer.Through the standard application process. Accept the offer before any work starts.
  3. The work is done.Usually in a day for a house. All external walls must be fully insulated.
  4. Post-works BER.A BER assessor rates the home after the work.
  5. Submit your evidence.Send SEAI the completed paperwork from the contractor and the BER.
  6. SEAI pays the grant. The fixed amount, after the work. SEAI may inspect the work.

Building Regulations: if the work alters more than 25% of the home's surface area, the home must reach at least a B2 BER, or have its heating system and attic insulation brought up to Building Regulation standard.

Before you apply

  • Find your MPRN on your electricity bill. SEAI tracks grants by MPRN, so it sees the first one.
  • Find the paperwork from the first job: the year, the contractor and what was done.
  • Get a survey and a written price from an SEAI-registered contractor for internal or external insulation.
  • Get the grant offer from SEAI before any work starts.

What we do

We pass your request to one SEAI-registered contractor who covers your area. Tell them the home had a wall grant before, and which one. They look at the walls and price internal or external insulation. You deal with SEAI on the grant itself.

Questions people ask

Can I get a second wall insulation grant?

Yes, if your home previously got a cavity or internal wall insulation grant. After cavity, you can apply for internal or external insulation. After internal, external only. After external, there's no second measure.

Can I get a second cavity wall grant?

No. If the cavity was filled with an SEAI grant before, the second measure is internal or external insulation, not another cavity fill.

Why did SEAI add the second measure?

To let homes insulated with cavity fill or dry lining upgrade further and become heat pump ready.
